Graduation Requirements

HSDB’s high school is 9th – 12th grade. To graduate from HSDB with a Hawai’i High School Diploma, a student must earn a minimum of 24 credits. Students may complete these 24 credits in 4 years or stay additional years until age 21 to complete the 24 required credits. Students who do not obtain the required 24 credits will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon graduation. The state mandated 24 credits are as follows:

English Language Arts (4 credits)

  • English Language Arts 1 (1.0 credit)
  • English Language Arts 2 (1.0 credit)
  • Expository Writing* (0.5 credit)
  • ELA basic electives (1.5 credits)

Social Studies (4 credits)

  • U.S. History and Government (1.0 credit)
  • World History and Culture (1.0 credit)
  • Modern History of Hawaii (0.5 credit)
  • Participation in a Democracy (0.5 credit)
  • Social Studies basic elective (1.0 credit)

Mathematics (3 credits)

  • Algebra 1 (1.0 credit)
  • Geometry (1.0 credit)
  • Mathematics basic elective (1.0 credit)

Science (3 credits)

  • Biology 1 (1.0 credit)
  • Science basic electives (2.0 credits)

Required Electives (2 credits in same program)

  • World Language (Note 1)
  • Fine Arts (Note 2)

Physical Education (P.E.) (One credit)

Notes:

  1. Two credits in a single World Language. Credits must be taken in sequence with consecutive course numbers in the study of one language.
  2. Two credits in a Fine Arts discipline: Visual Arts, Music, Drama or Dance. Credits do not need to be in a single discipline.
  3. CTE: Two credits need to be in a single career pathway program of study sequence. *Or equivalent course.
