Academic Bowl

BREAKING NEWS: 2020 West Regional Academic Bowl will be hosted in Honolulu, Hawai’i on February 21 to 24, 2020!

The Academic Bowl team at HSDB consists of three or four players and two coaches who will represent the school in West Regional Academic Bowl competition. The students and coaches are sent to the competition sites by HSDB through funds collected through fundraising by the Academic Bowl team and other means from the school. The competition is hosted by Gallaudet University’s Youth Programs annually in the spring semester.  The Academic Bowl competition requires students to put their knowledge in action by answering questions in a wide array of academic subjects including mathematics, social studies, language and literature, and science, along with external knowledge in pop culture, sports, entertainment, Deaf Studies, and social media.

HSDB assembled its first Academic Bowl team in the school year of 2004–2005 with Jeff Stabile as the coach and Peter “Trey” Balding III, Jadon Chin, and Bryce Takaki as the first team for the 2005 West Regional Academic Bowl competition in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Excerpted from Gallaudet University’s Youth Programs website in regards to the concept of Academic Bowl:

The Gallaudet University Academic Bowl was established with the goal of fostering the pursuit of academic excellence, promoting a spirit of academic competition and sportsmanship, and providing social opportunities for the development of collegiality and lifelong friendships. Every year, Gallaudet University hosts four Regional competitions for up to 80 teams of Deaf and Hard of Hearing high school students. 20 teams will then advance to the National competition held at Gallaudet every year.

The 2020 West Regional Academic Bowl competition will be the first time the West Regionals take place in our city of Honolulu.  This competition will have two schools coordinating together as the hosts: HSDB and Pearl City High School.
